Future-ish: Exploring the Science, Design, and Culture Shaping our Future & Introduction to Future Studies with Sean Schmidt, UW Tacoma Student Affairs & Founder, Future-ish

In the not-so-distant future, we will take calculus in kindergarten, design our own clothes and cars on handhelds, and enthusiastically keep our culture and traditions alive whether we are on Earth, the Moon, or Mars. Sean will share the background of the Future-ish website and book, provide an introduction to the field of future studies, and share ways to think about and plan for the future in a new, more robust, and more inclusive way by engaging with the science, design, and culture that is shaping our future.

Sean Schmidt is currently the Executive Administrator for the Division of Student Affairs at UW Tacoma but he has also led undergraduate seminars on future studies and sustainability at UW since 2014. He worked at Nordstrom for over 13 years where he launched their Sustainable Business & Development program and then co-founded Sustainable Style Foundation that promoted sustainability across 15 design industries. Schmidt also helped launch sustainability initiatives in UW Medicine and worked in UW Sustainability Office for three years prior to beginning his role at UW Tacoma.
